OZ Summer Dance 2024

OZ SUMMER DANCE is the first edition of Oficina Zero's summer intensive.

We are very happy to have four exciting artists in this first edition, who are also extraordinary women!

Mad_Rollerdance and Vittória de Ferrari in the first week and Cristina Planas Leitão and Judith Sanchez Ruiz in the second.

Two intense weeks, full of sun good energy and the smell and freshness of the sea.

The intensive takes place at the Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery from July 29th to August 9th, 2024.

"ROLLER DANCE"

In her workshops Madalena combines the knowledge of biomechanics, the artistic skating foundations and the love for dance, to guide the skaters/dancers on movement progression. During this week will briefly contextualise the culture of rollerdance, its origin and evolution, and we’ll be exploring skating skills, rollerdance movements and rhythm variations, following a progression based on the level of each participant. We will finally tune into some group choreographies, and improvisation moments creating a celebration and self-expression atmosphere.

MAD_ROLLERDANCE

Madalena started artistic skating at age 7, competed for a decade (2002-2012) and never stopped to roll since then. With a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy (2018) and studies in Dance (ESD Lisbon), she has been also an assistant coach. In 2019, Madalena’s path changed when she found the Rollerdance culture, without expression in Portugal at the time. Her passion for it has been motivating her to search and connect with the international skate scene, enriching her teaching and skating style, while promoting it in Portugal through community events/jam sessions (@rollerdance.lisboa) and classes. In the contemporary dance context, she is a performer in the piece “Cabraqimera” by Catarina Miranda.

“ARTYLOGICA”

The aim of my research and work after all these years of performing and working as an artist is to generate the right question that each person is searching for.

I won’t give any answer cause this is eventually what every artist will be busy within their own journey.

To understand which is the “right question” I will propose different kinds of exercise, engaging different technical abilities of our body; passing through strong physical dance movement till arriving at more physical theater guided improvisation. We will focus on searching new pathways in order to enrich our movement vocabulary.

My interest is in acknowledging our habits or limits and trying to break it or simply change it to open new different possibilities eventually for a new creating process.

The work in a couple or small group will certainly allow each dancer to explore easily the “unknown” sfere ,as well as the big influence that martial art brought into my research.

The workshop will explore the technical body aspect of our movement and bring it to dynamics and space and different architectural space awareness that can help us understand the natural source of it.

A part of my research is dedicated to using our physicality to explore more theatrical aspects of it and get to taste also the movement through a specific “state” instead of a simple technical task.

The journey that each person will have is related to the place where each of us is at that moment, so we will work on opening the door and “let the things happen ”instead of desperately searching for answers.

VITTORIA De FERRARI

After many years of dancing and touring with several choreographers such as Jan Fabre, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Damien Jalet, Akram Khan, and Romeo Castellucci, she started to develop her own personal research influenced by the different dance techniques and martial arts she has been training with. She began her career as a creator in 2013 while being a resident artist at Swatch Art Peace Hotel Shanghai, while there she created a dance video (“Closer”) that was shown at the Biennale of Venice 2015. In 2017 she choreographed and danced in the film “Beautiful Things” premiere at the Festival of Cinema of Venice and won several Prizes. She directed a show called “Mikado” for the European Capital of Culture 2022 (Kaunas). She gives workshops around the world with the title of “Artylogica” and “Ki-contact “(a partnering technique with the use of the Japanese wooden weapon).

"FLYING LOW - Finding the flow"

I embody and share the knowledge of David Zambrano’s Flying Low technique adapted to my own artistic vision and needs, always taking care of the temporary group that is formed for the class. I see it as a technique that teaches my body spiralling pathways and skills to move in and out of the floor in a very direct and intentional way - it's something I always keep in my pocket using it when in need, as with other techniques.

In the practice, the dynamics increase progressively using imagery and touch by exploring and exploding each short exercise, where participants are challenged to find their own solutions through experimenting, figuring out what are the pathways which cross their bodies, rather than established formulas or shapes. We work on the principles and the states rather than the exercises and everyone is challenged to disconnecting from the usual right & left or front & back idea.

The technique focuses on the relationship with the floor by utilizing simple movement sequences and by practicing speed and the release of energy throughout the body in order to activate the centre. There is a special attention given to the extremities as extensions of the centre and indicators of direction, proposing awareness and clarity to the movement.

The material challenges each participant to discover the primary laws of physics: cohesion and expansion and therefore many basic exercises are deconstructed into a more explorative work to achieve the needed individual state to further develop. The idea of our body as one and how to reach within ourselves can be later on anyone’s artistic practice and in life in general.

CRISTINA PLANAS LEITÃO

Porto, 1983

Cristina Planas Leitão is currently co-Artistic Director of Teatro Municipal do Porto, DDD - Festival Dias da Dança and CAMPUS Paulo Cunha e Silva, since July 2022.

She began her collaboration with TMPorto as a performing arts programmer in 2018, for the regular seasons from 2019/2020 onwards, the DDD - Dias da Dança Festival from the 2020 edition and in the genesis and artistic project of CAMPUS Paulo Cunha e Silva. She collaborated as an artistic consultant on the Braga'27 application, is a member of several jury panels, including PT23 and the La Caixa / Espaço do Tempo Creation Funds, and is a nominee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for the SEDA Award.

Her integrated curatorial practice centres on the development of sustainable creative formats, new narratives and caring relationships within the performing arts, with a growing interest in experimental practices that are politically and socially engaged. She has a strong interest in the intersections of curatorial and organizational practices with those of research and education. Over the years, Cristina has blurred the lines of disciplines, nationalities and hierarchies and sees the role of the curator as a facilitator, committed to anti-fascism, access and care.

As a choreographer, she approaches her choreographic work as an act of resistance and affection, researching themes connected to social and political movements and their relationship to the performing body, in the intimacy of the theatre. She created The very delicious piece and The Very Boring Piece, co-creations with Jasmina Krizaj, bear me, FM [featuring mortuum] and UM [unimal] - a piece highlighted by the Expresso and JN newspapers in 2018. Her work is documented in the series Portugal que Dança / RTP2 (Ep. 02).

As a teacher, she has been actively teaching the Flying Low and Passing Through techniques internationally since 2010, through a somatic and unconventional approach, as well as workshops around the content of her artistic practice. She has also worked on various projects as a dramaturgy and strategy consultant. She is a mentor and regular teacher at ArtEZ HK, Arnhem (NL).

She practices Hatha Yoga (CYT 200) and studies Vedic Astrology. She has a degree in Contemporary Dance, ArtEZ, Arnhem (NL), 2006.

YOUR OWN GOD (INTENSIVE IMPROVISATION)

Your Own God's departed from JSR's choreographic process and experience as a performer from diverse techniques and styles throughout her long international career.
These classes focus on individual wake-up innate potential from a functional point of view and artistic platform to strengthen possibilities and document basic tools. Using a methodologic that allows cognitive transformative artistic experimentation when composing work. It will trigger your un/comfortable zone and play with breaking habits. It will guide you to look for the unknown exploration of different approaches to the movement and develop movement in composition with space and in a relationship with others.

JUDITH SANCHEZ RUIZ

Judith Sánchez Ruíz is an accomplished international artist with a diverse background in choreography, performance, teaching, and improvisation. Originally from Havana, Cuba, she began her dance studies at the National School of Arts in Ciudad de la Habana at the age of 11. Throughout her career, Ms. Sanchez has collaborated with esteemed companies such as Sasha Waltz & Guest (2011-2014), Deborah Hay (2012), Trisha Brown Dance Company (2006-2009), DD Dorvillier (2002, 2019), David Zambrano (1997), Mal Pelo Company (1997-1999), and DanzAbierta Company (1991-1996).

Since 2010, Ms. Sanchez has served as the founder and director of JSR Company. She is now excited to launch her new Professional Contemporary Dance Certification Program in Berlin, scheduled for winter 2025. Applications are open until July 15, 2024. Ms. Sanchez became the first guest choreographer in 53 years for the Trisha Brown Dance Company, premiering her work "Let's Talk About Bleeding" at the Joyce Theater in New York City in 2023.

Looking ahead, JSR have upcoming commissioned projects as a guest choreographer. She will be working with the Ballet of the City of São Paulo this spring 2024 and with Divadlo Štúdio Tanca in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, in the fall of 2024. Further International workshops includes Madrid, Sevilla, and Mexico, coming up this Summer 2024.
